Care Companion connects self-employed carers directly with the families who need them, so both sides get what a traditional care agency struggles to offer: fair pay, flexible arrangements, and a real relationship — without the agency markup.
Where this started
Care Companion started with my own family member needing care, and me trying to coordinate it — juggling contracts, schedules, and care notes across several agencies at once, none of it straightforward. Some agencies cost more than was sustainable while still insisting on rigid, agency-set schedules. Others were arranged through the local authority, and while the carers themselves were generally fine, the timing often wasn't — a "lunchtime" visit landing at 2pm, a "bedtime" visit at 5pm. Private, self-employed carers consistently offered the best of both worlds: flexible, personal, and with no agency margin sitting between what we paid and what the carer actually kept. I've since worked inside a care agency myself, and I now provide private care directly to clients in my own area — so I've seen this from every side: as a family member arranging care, as an agency employee, and as a self-employed carer trying to be found by the right clients. Care Companion began as the tool I built to keep my own clients and carers organised in one place, without wrestling spreadsheets and paper files into submission every week. It worked well enough that it became obvious the problem wasn't specific to one business. Families across England are struggling with the cost and inflexibility of traditional care agencies. At the same time, self-employed carers — often more flexible, more affordable, and just as skilled — have no easy way to advertise what they offer or be found by the people who need them. Care Companion is growing from a single business's internal tool into a network built to close that gap nationwide.
What we're building
A platform where a family can find and coordinate with a self-employed carer directly, and a carer can run their own client relationships — their own rates, their own schedule, their own clients — without needing to be employed by an agency to be findable in the first place. Every client gets their own private circle: a shared workspace for the family arranging care, the family members who want visibility, and the carers delivering it — each seeing only what's appropriate for their role. Care plans, medication, visit logs, shift scheduling, timesheets, and invoicing all live in one place, generated from the same record rather than re-typed for every form.
What we believe
• Carers should keep what they earn. Self-employed carers set their own rates per client — Care Companion is a coordination tool, not an agency taking a cut of their pay. • Families deserve flexibility, not a one-size package. Care plans are built around the conditions a person actually has — dementia, COPD, Parkinson's, stroke recovery, and more — not a generic form. • Privacy has to be structural, not a promise. Access to a client's information is enforced at the database level according to each person's role in their circle — not something a UI screen merely hides.
